Gazing upon the Instituto de Físicia, one might initially see just a collection of buildings. But these walls hold a universe of stories. The Instituto de Físicia, also known as IFUSP, isn’t just Brazil’s largest physics research and teaching institution. It’s a living testament to the power of vision and collaboration. Established in 1970 right here in São Paulo’s University City, the Instituto de Físicia arose from the merging of two physics powerhouses. These were the Physics departments of the Polytechnic School and the Faculty of Philosophy, Sciences, and Languages. Imagine the intellectual energy that converged within these walls. Today, the Instituto de Físicia boasts over 20 buildings dedicated to classrooms, labs, and even workshops. It’s a sprawling 40,000 square meters of dedicated space for unlocking the secrets of the universe. The institute isn’t just about research. It also houses over a thousand undergraduate and postgraduate students. These students are shaping the future of physics in Brazil and beyond. The story of the Instituto de Físicia is deeply intertwined with the visionary physicist, Gleb Wataghin. Arriving in Brazil in 1934, he essentially founded the physics department at the then Faculty of Philosophy, Sciences and Languages (FFCL-USP). He not only brought a new approach to physics education but also established vital research lines. These focused on theoretical physics and the experimental study of cosmic rays. Wataghin had a knack for attracting brilliant minds. He brought renowned physicists like Giuseppe Occhialini to Brazil, further enriching the burgeoning physics scene. The legacy of Wataghin and his recruits is evident in the first graduating class of physicists in 1936. This class included figures like Marcello Damy de Souza Santos and Mario Schenberg, who would make significant contributions to the field. Even the second graduating class, in 1937, boasted a milestone. This class included Yolande Monteux, the first woman to graduate in physics in Brazil. Today, the Instituto de Físicia continues this tradition of excellence. It encompasses six departments. These are Materials Physics and Mechanics, Mathematical Physics, Experimental Physics, Nuclear Physics, Applied Physics, and General Physics. Its reach extends across a spectrum of research areas. These span nuclear physics, condensed matter physics, biophysics, applied physics, and numerous others. The Instituto de Físicia’s contributions aren’t confined to academia. Through programs like pre-scientific initiation and scientific initiation, it fosters a love of science in high school and undergraduate students. It also nurtures postdoctoral researchers, providing resources and support to advance their careers. The Instituto de Físicia is more than an institution. It’s a dynamic ecosystem of learning, discovery, and innovation. It is shaping the future of physics, one experiment, one student, one breakthrough at a time.
