Founded in 1990 by Lina Bo Bardi and Pietro Maria Bardi, the Instituto Bardi is more than just a building. It is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting Brazilian culture. The institute preserves the legacy of its founders. It supports Brazilian arts, design, and architecture. It also encourages exchanges between Brazilian and foreign intellectuals.

Pietro Maria Bardi once wrote about transforming their house into a curious example of immigrant dwellings. These immigrants contributed to the dissemination of the arts in Brazil. This vision led to the creation of the Instituto Bardi.

Lina Bo Bardi’s passing in 1992 prompted a name change. The institute was renamed Instituto Lina Bo e P.M. Bardi to honor her memory. Since then, the institute has focused on showcasing Lina Bo Bardi’s work.

In 1995, Pietro Maria Bardi donated the Glass House to the institute. Designed by Lina Bo Bardi in 1950, it served as their residence. Completed in 1951, the house was listed as a historical heritage site in 1987. The Glass House became the headquarters of the Instituto Bardi. It supports the maintenance of the space and preservation of its archive. The Glass House is the last museum created by the Bardi couple. It is dedicated to their trajectory and intellectual output.

Casa de Vidro embodies lightness and weight. It also shows harmony and density. The Glass House appears both grounded in and floating above its environment.

The Instituto Bardi maintains a vast documentary archive. It includes Lina Bo Bardi’s original drawings. The archive also holds the Bardi’s art collection and private library.
