Dream of living in a glass house? Here at Instituto Bardi, that dream is a reality. The Instituto Bardi, also known as Casa de Vidro, stands as a testament to Brazilian art, architecture, and design.

Founded in 1990 by Lina Bo Bardi and Pietro Maria Bardi, the Instituto Bardi is more than just a building. It is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting Brazilian culture. The institute preserves the legacy of its founders. It supports Brazilian arts, design, and architecture. It also encourages exchanges between Brazilian and foreign intellectuals.

Pietro Maria Bardi once wrote about transforming their house into a curious example of immigrant dwellings. These immigrants contributed to the dissemination of the arts in Brazil. This vision led to the creation of the Instituto Bardi.

Initially named Instituto Quadrante, the organization aimed to foster cultural activities related to art and architecture. This initial concept remains a core objective today. Shortly after its creation, the Bardi’s donated a significant artwork to the institute. The sale of this painting provided the initial capital.

Lina Bo Bardi’s passing in 1992 prompted a name change. The institute was renamed Instituto Lina Bo e P.M. Bardi to honor her memory. Since then, the institute has focused on showcasing Lina Bo Bardi’s work.

In 1995, Pietro Maria Bardi donated the Glass House to the institute. Designed by Lina Bo Bardi in 1950, it served as their residence. Completed in 1951, the house was listed as a historical heritage site in 1987. The Glass House became the headquarters of the Instituto Bardi. It supports the maintenance of the space and preservation of its archive. The Glass House is the last museum created by the Bardi couple. It is dedicated to their trajectory and intellectual output.

Casa de Vidro embodies lightness and weight. It also shows harmony and density. The Glass House appears both grounded in and floating above its environment.

The Instituto Bardi maintains a vast documentary archive. It includes Lina Bo Bardi’s original drawings. The archive also holds the Bardi’s art collection and private library.

The institute organizes exhibitions, publications, lectures, and conferences. These events provide public access to Brazilian artistic thought.

The Instituto Bardi defends the freedom to think, create, and debate. It transforms its headquarters into a space for knowledge exchange. The Glass House is an active space. It hosts visits, exhibitions, lectures, and seminars. The institute also leases areas for cultural events.

Here, the boundaries between art, architecture, and landscape blur. The Instituto Bardi invites us to reflect on the past. It also encourages us to engage with the present. It inspires future generations of artists and thinkers.
