A somber hush. That’s the feeling you get at Inspiration Park. This small park in the Kentlands is more than just a pretty place. It’s a poignant memorial. It’s a place of quiet reflection. Inspiration Park is dedicated to the victims of September 11 2001.
The stone monument stands simply. Its inscription reads “Inspiration Park Dedicated to those who lost their lives on Sept 11 2001 Peace”. This wasn’t always a memorial. Before 9/11 this land was vacant.
After the attacks developer Joe Alfandre donated the land. The City of Gaithersburg and Kentlands residents worked together. They transformed the empty space into a sanctuary. A place for quiet remembrance. Inspiration Lake is nearby. Its tranquil waters mirror the sky. It offers a peaceful setting. It’s perfect for contemplation.
Michele Potter the City of Gaithersburg’s Director of Parks Recreation and Culture saw the potential. She recognized the lake view as the ideal location. A perfect place for people to sit and reflect. The park’s dedication ceremony in 2002 was a candlelight vigil. It was an extraordinarily moving event.
Kentlands resident Dr Barry Aron shared a powerful story. He recounted his last phone call with his son Josh. Josh was in one of the World Trade Center’s upper floors. The story is etched in the park’s memory.
The park’s design is intentional. The trees and flowers bloom white. White symbolizes peace a universal wish especially on anniversaries like 9/11. Inspiration Park’s quiet beauty speaks volumes. It stands as a testament. A testament to the lives lost a decade ago. It’s a place for us to remember reflect and honor those who perished that day. It is a truly inspiring place.
