Inokashira Park Zoo opened its doors on May 17 1942. It quickly became a beloved spot in Musashino Tokyo. The zoo has a branch in Mitaka. It is more than just a place to see animals. It is a unique cultural spot.
Initially, there were plans to make Inokashira Park Zoo as grand as Ueno Zoo. However wartime shortages meant a shift in plans. It became a nature observation park instead. Even with these changes the zoo persevered.
The Inokashira Park Zoo is divided into two main areas. The main zoo in Gotenyama is home to mammals and birds. The Aquatic Life Park is in Inokashira Mitaka. There you find waterfowl and an aquarium. The zoo focuses on native Japanese species. You can find the Japanese squirrel and the Japanese serow there. Exotic animals such as the fennec fox and the crested porcupine also live here.
One notable resident was Hanako the Asian elephant. She arrived in 1954 from Ueno Zoo. Hanako was quite famous. She even broke the longevity record for elephants raised in Japan. Sadly Hanako passed away in 2016 at the age of 69.
Inokashira Park Zoo contributes to wildlife conservation. The zoo breeds endangered native species. These include the Tsushima leopard cat the Japanese fire belly newt the black-faced spoonbill and the Tokyo salamander.
But there is even more to discover than just the animals. A sculpture garden showcases 200 works by Seibo Kitamura. There is also a wild grass garden. You will find a Japanese camellia garden here. A mini amusement park adds to the fun. Poet Ujo Noguchi’s reading room called Doshinkyo was moved and reconstructed here.
