Ingarö itself is a significant island. It’s the 16th largest in Sweden. That’s quite impressive. Ingarö has been inhabited since the Bronze Age. Rock carvings are testament to this early presence. Think of the stories these carvings could tell.
For centuries life on Ingarö evolved. The population fluctuated. For a time the number of permanent residents decreased. Many vacation homes sprung up. However a turning point arrived. More vacation homes became permanent residences. New housing developments blossomed. Improved transport links made commuting to Stockholm easier. The population boom truly took off. By 2012 over 9000 people called Ingarö home.
Ingarö’s history is packed with fascinating characters. Carl Cederström Sweden’s first pilot is buried here. Locals fondly remember him as “Calle Flygare”. Two roads in Brunn even bear his name.
Beyond its history Ingarö offers much more. There’s a 36-hole golf course. Ingarö IF a local sports club once gained notoriety. They were labelled Sweden’s worst hockey team in a TV show. Sweden’s first nudist beach lies at Återvallssjön. This adds a unique dimension to the island’s offerings.
Ingarö’s allure extends to the silver screen. Parts of the 1993 film “Sune’s Summer” were filmed here. Scenes at a campsite and tennis court feature prominently. The 2011 adaptation of “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” also made use of Ingarö’s scenic locations. Björkvik a jetty and bathing spot served as a filming location.
Every June Ingarö hosts the Paradisloppet a 10 kilometer race around the island. The race’s founder Axel “Acke” Sundebrandt conceived the name during a run with a client from Spain.
