Industriekraftwerk Goldenberg played a crucial role in Germany’s energy history. Established in 1914 as the “Vorgebirgszentrale,” it quickly rose to become a cornerstone of the RWE company. The plant’s initial output of 30 MW doubled within a year, fueled by the escalating energy demands of World War I. Imagine the hum of activity as the plant churned out power for the production of explosives and electrochemical products. The ingenuity of Bernhard Goldenberg, the plant’s namesake and RWE’s technical director, is evident in its design. Throughout its lifespan, Industriekraftwerk Goldenberg underwent numerous transformations, a testament to evolving technologies and national needs. It even survived the aerial bombardments of World War II, though not unscathed. After the war, it was rebuilt and continued to power Germany until 2015 when electricity production ceased.
