Established by a group of teachers in 1964 Indac Instituto de Arte e Ciência emerged as a haven for free courses rooted in a libertarian philosophy. Initially Indac served as an institute providing varied courses preparing students for exams. These courses were for both Madureza and Vestibulares. Most of the students were women.
Fast forward to the early 1980s. Indac expanded its horizons with the inauguration of the Escola de Atores also known as Indac. Interestingly this acting school operated at a separate location from the original institute. It wasn’t until 2013 that both entities merged uniting under one roof.
The INDAC Escola de Atores took shape in 1981. It became a satellite of Antunes Filho’s Centro de Pesquisa Teatral. The school mirrored its research approach. Numerous faculty members had ties to the CPT. These included current director Maucir Campanholi Luís Melo Hélio Cícero and others. Today Indac offers diverse courses. Students can enroll in both open and technical courses. They learn acting physical and vocal expression makeup theater history dramaturgy and stage productions. Each semester culminates in a montage.
For almost four decades Indac has cemented its place as a prominent acting school in Sāo Paulo. It holds the distinction of being among the first professional theater courses recognized by the Ministry of Education.
Indac boasts an impressive alumni network filled with prominent figures. Alessandra Negrini Oscar Filho and Débora Dubois honed their skills here. Giulio Lopes Leonardo Miggiorin and Marina Wisnik are also alumni.
In its early years Indac fostered a strong bond between teachers the school and students. Good humor was a defining characteristic still evident today. During this period the Supletivo teaching method began. In the 1980s Indac’s student body evolved. Young people sought out unconventional education. The institution responded by introducing professional theater courses and regular secondary education.
With its libertarian philosophy Indac saw immediate success. The early 1990s marked a clear commitment to valuing its people. This included teachers staff and students. The school operated across two campuses. One campus served the regular primary education from 5th to 8th grade.
In the 2000s Indac introduced the Supletivo program for primary education. The school remained committed to individualized attention. At the start of the 21st century Indac underwent significant changes. The secondary and primary education programs moved to Rua Dante Carraro. The theater program relocated to Praça Américo Jacomino.
After careful consideration Indac unified both units at the Praça Américo Jacomino location. The larger space provided a better environment. In 2019 Indac moved to Rua Havaí in Perdizes. Since its founding Indac has prioritized freedom. It encourages critical thinking. It also encourages learning about the world. Indac respects individual limits. Learning here is a pleasurable experience. It is not painful. Indac values creativity critical thinking and reflection.
Democracy is another hallmark of Indac. Students can express their ideas on any subject. A strong sense of affection and complicity marks the connection between teachers students directors and staff.
