In Memoriam

From the bustling heart of Cape Town emerges a poignant tribute. It’s called In Memoriam, a memorial dedicated to the unsung heroes of the South African Labour Corps. These brave men, over 1,700 of them, served during the First World War. Their contributions were essential, yet their stories remained untold for far too long. In Memoriam now stands proudly in the Company’s Garden, a place steeped in history. This garden also houses the Iziko South African Museum, the South African National Gallery, and other significant landmarks. In Memoriam’s location near the Delville Wood Memorial underscores the connection between these two groups of South African soldiers. Those who fought at Delville Wood and in other theaters of war, and those who labored tirelessly behind the lines. The creation of In Memoriam was a collaborative effort. South Africans and military veterans were consulted to choose the most fitting location. The winning design, titled “The Last Post,” was conceived by Durban-based Dean Jay Architects. Construction began in March 2024, marked by a ceremony with dignitaries including Cape Town’s Mayor and a descendant of one of the commemorated servicemen. The memorial’s construction incorporates local materials. African Iroko hardwood posts, each bearing a serviceman’s name, rise from South African Rustenburg granite. This design evokes the scale of the Labour Corps’ contribution. It invites visitors to walk among the posts. They can contemplate the individual lives lost and the collective sacrifice made. In Memoriam is more than just a memorial. It is a testament to resilience, a symbol of recognition long overdue, and a poignant reminder of the human cost of war. These men served in non-combat roles, primarily in Africa. They faced immense challenges. Many perished not in battle but from diseases like malaria, contracted during their service in East Africa. In Memoriam ensures their legacies endure, echoing through history for generations to come.
