Hidden within Prague’s embrace lies Imperial Island, a slender, 1.7-kilometer stretch of land nestled along the Vltava River. It’s a place where history and recreation intertwine, offering a unique escape from the bustling city. Originally known as Royal Meadow, Imperial Island began as a wide riverbank. It hosted the grand coronation feast of King Wenceslas II in 1297. Over time, it evolved into a beloved leisure spot for Praguers. The 19th century saw social gatherings, sporting events, even horse races grace its grounds. Gold panning also took place here, adding a touch of unexpected allure to the island’s story. The transformation into Imperial Island was a feat of engineering. During the construction of the Smíchov Port between 1899 and 1903, earth excavated from the western part of the meadow was artfully used to create this artificial island. Imperial Island holds a special place in Czech football history. In 1893, it hosted the very first official football match in the Czech lands. Austria-Hungary’s top club, Regatta, triumphed over Loučeň with a resounding 5-0 victory. A few years later, on March 29, 1896, the island witnessed the inaugural derby between Slavia and Sparta. This match, ending in a 0-0 draw, marked the beginning of a fierce rivalry between Prague’s two most prominent clubs. The incident that sparked this rivalry stemmed from a disputed goal and highlighted the evolving nature of football rules at the time. A curious twist in Imperial Island’s tale is its occasional confusion with another islet, sometimes referred to as Imperial Island or Emperor’s Island. Today, Imperial Island offers a blend of historical echoes and modern amenities. It houses a marina for small vessels, a caravan site, the Cinda restaurant, a golf driving range, and various sports fields. A bridge connects the southern end of the island to Smíchov, providing easy access for visitors. Since 2008, a ferry service has also connected the island to Prague’s integrated transport system, further enhancing its accessibility.
