What if these walls could talk? The Chiesa dell’Immacolata Concezione e San Donato has stood here in Borgo San Donato since 1869. Its story is woven into the very fabric of this neighborhood.

Initially, this community was part of the Parrocchia dei SS Simone e Giuda. As the San Donato quarter grew, the need for its own parish became clear. In 1855, the Immacolata Concezione e San Donato found a temporary home in the chapel of the Istituto della Sacra Famiglia. The community needed a dedicated space. Construction began in 1867 and concluded in 1869. The Chiesa dell’Immacolata Concezione e San Donato was finally a reality.

The church’s architect, Serena, created an eclectic design that embodies the late 19th century. Simonetti of Rivoli designed the Latin cross layout with three naves. Inside the Immacolata Concezione e San Donato, the Carrara marble altar is a gift from the Montù family.

Look for the fresco by Costantino Sereno to the right of the first altar. Eight side altars reside in the chapels along the naves. Paintings donated from other parishes adorn these chapels.

Above, in the main vault, an elliptical medallion depicts the struggle between good and evil. Three windows nearby represent the vices of corruption and the virtues of chastity. In the cupola’s lantern, the Virgin Mary cradles Christ Pantocrator. Eight angels surround them. Ester and Giuditta are painted on the transcept’s side vaults. The apse features a 16th-century niche with a statue of the Immaculate holding lilies. This statue is a work of Caccia of Milan. A 150-meter band encircles the presbytery displaying the text of the Magnificat. Thirty-two Corinthian capitals with gilded stucco decorate the transept and naves. Medallions portraying popes, martyrs, and saints flank them. Stained glass decorates the hemispherical rosette window.

The Chiesa dell’Immacolata Concezione e San Donato wasn’t spared during World War II. Bombings caused walls to collapse and damaged the roof. Despite the damage, the church persevered. It was officially consecrated on October 17, 1951.

Enrico Ruffoni designed the neo-Gothic facade in 1906. Adolfo Barberis added the current decorations in 1923. Limited funds meant inexpensive materials were used. A restoration between 1998 and 2002 preserved its condition.

The Immacolata Concezione e San Donato continues to be a vibrant part of the community. The parish hosts various events. The Azione Cattolica di San Donato celebrates the feast of membership. Community prayer gatherings take place regularly. Catechism classes are offered for children.

The Chiesa dell’Immacolata Concezione e San Donato stands as a testament to faith and community. It’s a place where history and spirituality intertwine. Take a moment to appreciate its beauty and the stories it holds within its walls.
