Right here on Le Page Court, within this unassuming industrial building, lies a story of faith, community, and unwavering dedication. Imdadul Islamic Jamat isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a testament to the vision of one man, Haji Shamir Khan. He rallied the Muslim community in the Jane and Finch area, holding prayers and classes wherever he could, in community centers, schools, even apartment basements. He dreamed of a dedicated space, a masjid that would unite the community. Khan’s vision materialized here at Imdadul Islamic Jamat. He tirelessly raised funds, even taking interest-free loans to avoid burdening the masjid with debt. His emotional pleas, often delivered with tears streaming down his face, resonated with the community, especially his fellow Guyanese Muslims. His wife, Hajin Shareenfun Nessa, was his steadfast supporter in this endeavor. Imdadul Islamic Jamat became a beacon, attracting Sunni scholars from around the globe. Luminaries like Imam Muhammad Alawi al-Maliki of Makkah and Shaykh Muhammad Abu Bakr Ba Shu’ayb graced this space, sharing their knowledge and inspiring the community. The masjid also hosted the Grand Annual Milad-un-Nabi Conference, organized by the World Islamic Mission Canada. Haji Shamir Khan’s legacy extends beyond the physical structure of Imdadul Islamic Jamat. He championed education, establishing a madrasa led by Ustadh Haniff Bagh Khan. Bagh Khan, a pharmacist turned educator, developed a simplified system for teaching Arabic, making the Quran accessible to non-Arabic speakers. His system, used internationally, even reached local public schools through the Ministry of Education’s Heritage Language Division. The spirit of community service thrives at Imdadul Islamic Jamat. They offer social support, senior programs, a food bank, and even funeral services. They host a sisters program monthly and feed the homeless every first Sunday of the month. Haji Shamir Khan’s dream of a unified community continues to flourish here, a legacy carried on by his family and the countless lives he touched. The Imdad Annex, a recent addition, further expands the masjid’s reach, hosting banquets, social gatherings, and youth programs. The vision of Imdadul Islamic Jamat, born from tears and prayers, has blossomed into a vibrant center of faith and community.
