Did you know that Il Ponte sulla Dora is more than just a bridge? It is a testament to Turin’s evolution. We are standing before Il Ponte sulla Dora. It is a vital part of the city’s history.

Il Ponte sulla Dora stands in the Aurora district. It is near Porta Palazzo. This location highlights its historical role as a gateway.

Originally, there was an inadequate wooden structure here. It was not functional anymore. The wooden bridge was replaced. Carlo Bernardo Mosca was tasked with designing a stone bridge. This was to create a monumental entrance to the city.

Construction began in December 1823. Authorities and royals attended the laying of the first stone. A ceremony record and coins were sealed inside. The work faced challenges and delays. It finally concluded on August 15, 1830. This was Turin’s most daring architectural feat of the 19th century.

The structure raised doubts about its stability. An anecdote tells of the builder allaying fears. He stood under the bridge with his family on a boat. This act proved the structure’s integrity. It still stands in its original condition. Today it handles much heavier traffic.

Building Il Ponte sulla Dora required altering the Dora Riparia river’s natural curves. The stone structure’s weight demanded a special framework. This prevented collapse during construction.

Upon its opening, Il Ponte sulla Dora was technically advanced. It marked both a grand entrance and Turin’s northern boundary. The bridge was named Mosca in 1868. This honored the architect after his death in 1867. The road over the bridge was known as Corso Ponte Mosca. In 1937, it was renamed Corso Giulio Cesare.

The architectural structure is made of Malanaggio stone. It is 45 meters long. Including the entrance squares, its total length reaches 129 meters. The bridge features a single span with a low arch. It has a rise of only 4.5 meters. The sidewalks are made of Cumiana stone. The vault comprises 93 courses of precisely cut stone. The arch is lightened by two splays. These create a lower profile with a rise of 3.75 meters.

The bridge’s width is 13.70 meters. This matches Via Milano. The roadway width is 8.90 meters. Today, Il Ponte sulla Dora accommodates pedestrians and vehicles. Tram line 4 crosses it. At night, the lower arch is illuminated. This creates a striking visual effect.

Il Ponte sulla Dora is not just a crossing. It embodies Turin’s architectural ambition. It showcases the city’s dedication to progress. Its story tells of overcoming challenges. It reflects the pride in creating enduring landmarks. As you leave Il Ponte sulla Dora, remember its legacy. It connects Turin’s past with its present. It symbolizes the city’s ongoing journey.
