Gazing up at this concrete giant, you’re standing before Igrek. Igrek is a unique residential building here in Warsaw. It’s also known as Wiatrak, which means “windmill”. Built in 1964, Igrek was the first of its size in Warsaw. It was even considered the biggest residential building in the city during the 1960s. Igrek dominates the skyline with its distinctive Y-shape. This unusual design was actually inspired by the UNESCO Headquarters building in Paris. Imagine almost 920 people calling this place home. Igrek stands as a testament to the architectural ambition of post-war Warsaw, a concrete Y reaching for the sky. Its nicknames, Igrek (Y) and Wiatrak (windmill), perfectly capture its unique form when seen from above. Part of the Mariańska neighborhood, Igrek stands alongside other structures built between 1961 and 1967. The neighborhood, nestled between Jana Pawła II Avenue, Plater Street, Świętokrzyska Street, and Twarda Street, was designed by Hanna Lewicka and Wojciech Piotrowski. Igrek’s imposing stature and unusual design make it a memorable landmark in the heart of Warsaw.
