What if these stones could talk? Imagine the stories etched into the very foundation of Igreja Sāo Francisco.

Igreja Sāo Francisco stands proudly in São Paulo. It is a testament to colonial Brazil’s religious fervor. This church and convent have witnessed centuries of change.

Back in 1639 Franciscan friars arrived in São Paulo from Bahia. They first settled in the Church of Saint Anthony. But the location was deemed unhealthy. In 1642 they requested land from the City Council. They moved to a plot on the edge of the town’s founding hill. Here in Largo de São Francisco they built their convent. It was inaugurated on September 17 1647.

The Igreja Sāo Francisco’s convent church underwent significant changes in the mid-18th century. It adopted the Baroque style. It features a single nave. Two Baroque carved altarpieces adorn the transept. Rosewood choir stalls are also noteworthy.

Tragedy struck in the late 19th century. A fire severely damaged the church and convent. A new altarpiece was bought in Germany. It was then installed on the high altar. The nave’s curved wooden ceiling displays paintings. These depict the life of St. Francis. They date back to 1953. These paintings are reworked versions of those destroyed in 1880.

Adjacent to Igreja Sāo Francisco is the Chapel of the Third Order. In 1676 the Secular Franciscan Order began building a chapel. It was meant for the order inside the Franciscan church. The chapel was inaugurated in 1787. It expanded into an independent temple. Its facade attached to the convent church.

In the 1820s the Franciscans left the convent building. The imperial government needed it. It housed the Academy of Social and Legal Sciences. Today it is the Law School of the University of São Paulo. In 1933 the original building was torn down. Ricardo Severo designed a new facility. It was built in the neo-colonial style.

Igreja Sāo Francisco became a registered heritage site in 1982. Its historical and architectural value is immense.

Today Igreja Sāo Francisco stands as a symbol of faith history and resilience. Its walls echo with the prayers of generations past. Its presence enriches the cultural landscape of São Paulo. Take a moment to appreciate the enduring legacy of Igreja Sāo Francisco. It is more than just a church. It is a living piece of history. It connects us to the soul of São Paulo.
