Originally a simple chapel known as Capela de Santa Cruz the Igreja Nossa Senhora da Saúde holds a rich history. In 1916 it was entrusted to the Augustinian Recollect Fathers. On April 19 1917 it was reborn as Igreja Nossa Senhora da Saúde. The small chapel quickly proved inadequate. A grander structure was needed.
On May 4 1928 the cornerstone of the present church was laid. Seven years later on June 7 1935 the doors opened for worship. The church’s construction however continued for many years. The magnificent high altar with its ornate tabernacle and baldachin wasn’t completed until 1959.
