Before 1720 a humble chapel stood here. It was the Capela de Nossa Senhora da Conceiçao. This was one of Sao Paulo’s oldest chapels. The Igreja Nossa Senhora da Conceiçao we see today is its successor. A grander more imposing structure.

In 1809 Prince Regent Dom Joao VI established the Nossa Senhora da Conceiçao and Santa Ifigenia parish. This gave its name to the surrounding square and neighborhood. Dom Joao also decreed that the Brotherhood of Santa Ifigenia and Santo Elesbao a group of freed Black people should reside in the new church. A remarkable step towards inclusion.

The colonial church met its end in the early 20th century. Architect Johann Lorenz Madein designed its replacement. Construction began in 1904. The church opened in 1910 although unfinished. Work finally ended around 1913. The neo-Romanesque style with its Gothic details evokes medieval churches of Northern Europe.

The interior is richly adorned. There are paintings vibrant stained glass intricate pulpits and a monumental organ. These elements tell a story of devotion and artistic skill. The church served as the city’s cathedral from 1930 to 1954 while the Sao Paulo Cathedral was being built. In 1958 Pope Pius XII elevated it to the status of a basilica.
