What stories could these walls tell? The Igreja Luterana da Esperança stands as a beacon of faith. It is a testament to the enduring Lutheran community in Brazil.

The Evangelical Church of the Lutheran Confession in Brazil or IECLB began with German immigrants arriving in 1824. They brought their Evangelical faith. São Leopoldo became a German Protestant stronghold. It served as a base for expansion. Later, similar colonization projects drew German immigrants north. They settled up to Espiritu Santo. This led to many Protestant congregations and parish schools.

The first permanent church body was the synod of Rio Grande do Sul in 1886. Other states followed. The present church was inaugurated in 1949. It was a federation of synods. Initially, it was restricted to the German community. After World War II, IECLB members integrated into Brazilian society.

In 1968, the synods merged into a nationwide church in São Paulo. It had a central administration with various regions. In 1998, the IECLB approved a new structure. This structure was based on 18 synods. Six advisory groups to the presidency were set up in 2000. They focused on theology, mission, ecumenism, public responsibility, gender, and ethnicity.

The IECLB runs many institutions. These include 57 parochial schools, 21 hospitals, and 48 social centers. It also has 21 retreat centers and four publishing houses. The IECLB engages in dialogues with other churches. These include the Catholic Church and the Episcopal Anglican Church of Brazil.

Priorities for the IECLB include confessional unity and public responsibility. It also addresses internal movements and issues like faith and money. Human sexuality and HIV/AIDS are also important.

The Igreja Luterana da Esperança continues to play a vital role. It serves the Lutheran community. It embodies the IECLB’s mission. This includes diaconal activities and social responsibility. The Liga de Leigos Luteranos do Brasil is an auxiliary organization of the IECLB. It was founded in 1971.

The church addresses action in five areas. These are Testemunho, Ensino, Comunhão, Adoração and Diaconia. The Juventude Evangélica Luterana do Brasil gathers young people. They meet weekly to study the Word of God.
