Gazing upon the Igreja de Santo Antônio, can you sense the echoes of centuries past? This unassuming church, nestled in Patriarca Square, holds the distinction of being the oldest surviving church in São Paulo. Its story begins in the late 16th century, a humble chapel mentioned in a will dated 1592. The Igreja de Santo Antônio grew from this modest origin. In 1638, the chapel underwent renovations. The following year, Franciscan friars arrived from Rio de Janeiro, making the chapel their home. Even after they built their convent in Largo São Francisco, they continued to care for the little chapel. By 1717, the chapel, with the support of devotees and Bishop Dom Bernardo Rodrigues Nogueira, underwent significant expansion, transforming it into a full-fledged church. The Igreja de Santo Antônio continued to evolve. In 1774, the Brotherhood of Our Lady of the Rosary of the White Men took over its administration, making it their headquarters. The brotherhood carried out further modifications, especially to the facade. Disaster struck in 1891, when fire from a neighboring building damaged the Igreja de Santo Antônio. Later, in 1899, the City Council ordered the demolition and reconstruction of the tower and facade due to street alignment works. The Baron of Tatuí and the Count of Prates, both residents near the church, financed the work. The church we see today, with its eclectic facade, reopened in 1919. In 1970, despite numerous renovations that altered its original character, the Igreja de Santo Antônio was recognized as a landmark by Condephaat, preserving its historical significance. Tragedy struck again in 1991, with another fire damaging the rear of the building. Restoration efforts in 2005 unveiled hidden treasures within the Igreja de Santo Antônio. Workers discovered 17th-century paintings depicting angels beneath layers of paint and carvings on a side altar. The restoration also revealed a 17th-century painting on the ceiling of the high altar, miraculously surviving the fires of 1891 and 1991. The Igreja de Santo Antônio stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of São Paulo. Its story, woven with faith, resilience, and artistic discovery, continues to unfold.
