Perhaps you have heard how a project of Christ started in 1899. That project remains alive today at Igreja Batista Memorial.
Let’s dive into the story of Igreja Batista Memorial. It began in a store on Rua Santa Efigênia in June 1899. American missionaries J.J. Taylor and J.L. Downing initiated the work. Eighteen members came from Rio de Janeiro. They also came from Belo Horizonte and Santa Barbara do Oeste. Two churches already existed in those locations.
The Igreja Batista Memorial grew rapidly. In January 1900, it moved to Rua dos Guayanazes. By 1905, the church relocated to a rented hall on Rua General Osório. That same year in August, it moved again to Rua Timbiras. The church stayed there until 1910.
Next, Igreja Batista Memorial moved to Travessa São João. It remained there until 1915. From 1916 to 1917, the church temporarily occupied the Noble Hall of the Christian Association of Young Men. This hall was located in Praça da República.
Finally, Igreja Batista Memorial acquired land. This land was situated in Largo dos Guayanazes now Praça Princesa Isabel. On July 6, 1917, the inaugural celebration took place. A large crowd attended. At that time, the church had 108 members. In 1926, a building on Rua General Rondon was purchased. This building bordered the back of the church and served as the pastor’s residence.
Demolition of the old Igreja Batista Memorial began in 1957. The goal was to construct the current sanctuary and religious education building. Engineer Gerson Kerr oversaw the project. In 1984, the facilities of the current Religious Education Building were inaugurated.
The Igreja Batista Memorial reached a maximum of 1750 members. Many converts joined. However, most became members of churches in other locations. This was partly due to the socioeconomic situation in the Campos Elísios neighborhood.
The Social Action Ministry stands out. It assists those in need. This assistance extends beyond the church to the wider community. The ministry offers free courses for training and development. It addresses people’s needs holistically. It offers spiritual, psychological, and material guidance. Family support is also provided.
