“Is this the church that started in a living room?” a young voice piped up. Indeed, the Iglesia de Vida Nueva has humble beginnings, not in Tegucigalpa, but in San Salvador, El Salvador. Our story begins on January 20, 1991, in the living room of Julio Contreras. A small group of fourteen people gathered. Five months later, this burgeoning congregation, now numbering thirty-three souls, officially established the Iglesia Bautista Vida Nueva, meaning “New Life Baptist Church” on June 9, 1991. The Iglesia de Vida Nueva, even in its early stages, held firm to three core principles. Evangelism and discipleship were paramount. They emphasized one-on-one guidance to nurture new believers. Expository preaching, explaining the scriptures, ensured a deep understanding of the Bible. This was further supported by the Vida Nueva Bible Institute. Teamwork, inspired by the Book of Acts, fostered collaboration and mutual support within the church. The church’s growth was remarkable. By 1994, the congregation had outgrown its rented space and moved to a new property in the Miralvalle neighborhood. The Iglesia de Vida Nueva continued to expand, building an auditorium, Sunday school classrooms, and administrative offices. By 2007, they had a thriving community of 550 members. They even established a Christian school with over 220 students. Iglesia de Vida Nueva’s influence extended beyond San Salvador. The Metro America Missions Program, started in 2004, planted new Vida Nueva churches throughout Latin America. Locations include Managua, Nicaragua. Guatemala City, Guatemala. San Jose, Costa Rica. Bogota, Colombia. San Pedro Sula, Honduras. And even Mexico City. As of January 2025, the Iglesia de Vida Nueva in San Salvador boasts four campuses, thirteen weekly services, and a congregation of approximately 2,500 adults. While the specific details of the Iglesia de Vida Nueva here in Tegucigalpa might differ, the spirit and foundation are likely rooted in this inspiring story of faith, growth, and outreach.
