What whispers echo within the walls of Iglesia de Dios la Nueva Jerusalén? We stand before a testament to faith, a beacon of the Pentecostal movement in Honduras. Iglesia de Dios la Nueva Jerusalén isn’t just a building. It’s a chapter in a story that spans continents and centuries. The tale begins not here in Tegucigalpa, but in the Appalachian Mountains of the United States. In 1886, a small group yearning for spiritual revival formed the Christian Union. This humble beginning marked the birth of what would become the Church of God. The movement spread, reaching Honduras in the mid-20th century. In 1945, the first Church of God in Honduras was established on the island of Utila. The mainland wasn’t far behind. In 1949, two brothers, José Absalón and Lemuel Benítez, planted the seeds of faith in Nueva Armenia, Copán. The church blossomed, fueled by fervent preaching and miraculous events. The spirit of revival swept through the region, establishing a strong foundation for the Church of God in Honduras. The story of Iglesia de Dios la Nueva Jerusalén is intertwined with the arrival of the first Latino missionaries, Josué Beltrán Rubio and his wife, Vennette Darrell de Rubio, in Tegucigalpa in 1950. They established a church in the Buenos Aires neighborhood, furthering the expansion of the Church of God. A great revival in 1957 ignited the western part of Honduras, with hundreds receiving baptism and experiencing the power of the Holy Spirit. The movement continued to spread, impacting communities across the nation. Iglesia de Dios la Nueva Jerusalén stands as a symbol of this remarkable growth and unwavering faith. The Church of God’s commitment to education also took root. Sunday schools flourished and young people were encouraged to pursue theological studies. The establishment of the Biblical Institute in Tegucigalpa in 1969 underscored the importance of education in nurturing the next generation of church leaders. By 1989, the Church of God in Honduras restructured into seven territorial areas, reflecting its expansion. The church continued to grow, with membership increasing to over 60,000 by the 21st century. Today, Iglesia de Dios la Nueva Jerusalén is part of a vibrant network of over 1,000 congregations across Honduras. Iglesia de Dios la Nueva Jerusalén represents a legacy of faith, resilience, and growth. It’s a story of humble beginnings that blossomed into a powerful movement, touching countless lives and shaping the religious landscape of Honduras.
