“Did they really walk all the way from Guatemala?” You might ask that question standing here in front of the Iglesia de Dios in Tegucigalpa. It might sound incredible, but that’s exactly how the Church of God’s story began in Honduras. Before the grand churches and cathedrals graced Tegucigalpa’s skyline, the seeds of faith were sown in the heart of a man named Lemuel Benítez. In 1949, he and his brother embarked on a journey from Puerto Barrios, Guatemala, to Nueva Armenia, Copán, Honduras. They yearned to share their newfound faith in the Church of God. Their journey marked the beginning of the Church of God in Honduras. However, the Iglesia de Dios in Tegucigalpa, the one we stand before today, has its own remarkable tale. This church was founded by the first Latino missionaries of the Church of God to reach Honduras, José Beltrán Rubio and Vennette Darrell de Rubio. They arrived in Tegucigalpa in October 1950. They chose the Buenos Aires neighborhood as their base. From these humble beginnings, the Iglesia de Dios in Tegucigalpa became a beacon of faith. It nurtured a growing community and played a pivotal role in the expansion of the Church of God throughout Honduras.
