Has anyone ever felt a divine calling leading them to a completely unfamiliar place? That’s exactly what happened to two young American missionaries, Vonnitt and Edwin Gurney. In 1952, they felt a powerful pull towards Tegucigalpa to establish the first Iglesia Cuadrangular in Honduras. They arrived in Honduras with no contacts, no clear plan, and limited Spanish. Yet, they carried an unshakeable faith and a bold proclamation: “I establish the Kingdom of God in this country.” Their first evangelical crusade began on October 16, 1952. Just ten days later, the first Sunday school was held, attracting a surprising 62 adults and 185 children. The Iglesia Cuadrangular quickly became a beacon of hope and spiritual growth. Seeing the need for trained ministers, the Gurneys established the Instituto Bíblico Cuadrangular in 1953. The first class had only 14 students. But it marked the beginning of a legacy of theological education in Honduras. By 1955, the growing congregation needed a larger space. The Gurneys, along with members of the church, built the first Iglesia Cuadrangular temple in Tegucigalpa. This building became a testament to their dedication and the community’s shared faith. From this central location, the Cuadrangular movement spread throughout Honduras. New churches were established in San Pedro Sula, La Unión, Trinidad, Santa Bárbara, and Nacaome. The Gurneys served in Honduras for over 14 years before returning to the United States. They left behind a thriving spiritual community and a legacy of dedicated leaders. The Iglesia Cuadrangular in Tegucigalpa stands today as a symbol of their unwavering faith and the transformative power of a divine calling. It’s a reminder that even in unfamiliar territory, with limited resources, a strong belief can build a community and establish a lasting legacy.
