What if I told you that a small group’s desire sparked the birth of a thriving church? That’s the story of Iglesia Cristiana Reformada in Tegucigalpa.

In 1962 twenty-six members of the Iglesia Evangélica y Reformada de Honduras moved here. They came from San Pedro Sula. These people wanted to continue worshiping together.

They asked their former church to start a new congregation here. The Iglesia Evangélica y Reformada de Honduras did not grant their request. Undeterred the group sought help elsewhere. They turned to the Christian Reformed Church in North America.

Help arrived in 1972. Missionaries from North America came to Tegucigalpa. They helped plant a new church. This marked the beginning of Iglesia Cristiana Reformada.

The Christian Reformed Church in North America registered in the country in 1974. Over the next years new churches sprouted across Honduras. They grew in the north, south, and central regions.

This growth led to the formation of a synod. In 1990 the Iglesia Cristiana Reformada de Honduras became a fully independent national church.

The church also established a theological seminary. Additionally they opened four theological centers and a polytechnic school. These institutions helped train leaders and serve the community.

By 2004 the Iglesia Cristiana Reformada had grown significantly. It had 57 congregations and 1500 members.

The church continued to expand. By 2011 it had 75 churches with 5000 members.

The Iglesia Cristiana Reformada holds firm beliefs. It subscribes to several important creeds. These include the Apostles Creed and the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed. They also adhere to the Athanasian Creed, Canons of Dort, and Heidelberg Catechism.

Importantly the church ordains women. Women can serve in all offices of the church. This inclusive practice reflects a commitment to equality.

The Iglesia Cristiana Reformada maintains relationships with other organizations. It is a member of the World Communion of Reformed Churches. It also belongs to the Alliance of Presbyterian and Reformed Churches of Latin America. The church is also part of the Latin American Council of Churches.

The Iglesia Cristiana Reformada is known for its social work. During the COVID-19 pandemic it distributed hygiene products. This action demonstrated its commitment to helping the community.

From a small group’s vision to a large network of churches the Iglesia Cristiana Reformada has made a big impact. It continues to spread its message and serve the people of Honduras. Its story is one of faith, resilience, and community.
