The Iglesia Catolica Madre de la Misericordia stands as a testament to faith and history in Tegucigalpa. It is a place where generations have come to worship. Its very stones whisper tales of Honduras’s past.

The history of churches in Honduras is closely tied to the colonial era. The St Michael the Archangel Cathedral was built between 1765 and 1786. Bishop Diego Rodriguez de Rivas y Velasco ordered the construction of a new temple in 1756. He entrusted the objective to priest Jose Simeon Zelaya Cepeda. The architect was Joseph Gregory Billzarian Quiroz from Guatemala. Fray Antonio de San Miguel consecrated it in 1782.

The St Michael the Archangel Cathedral is well known for being the biggest Catholic church during colonial times. It is also one of the most well-preserved historical buildings in Honduras.

The Iglesia Catolica Madre de la Misericordia has witnessed pivotal moments in Tegucigalpa’s history. The Cathedral of San Miguel de Tegucigalpa is one of the oldest and most important buildings in the city. It has a place in Honduran history not limited to Tegucigalpa but to the entire country. It is the most renowned and traditional church since the beginning of the 20th century.

Inside the St Michael the Archangel Cathedral, the single vaulted body rises impressively. The dome reaches a height of 30 meters. The architecture follows a Baroque style. In 1788, religious painter José Miguel Gómez completed painting work in the Cathedral. His works include Holy Family, Holy Trinity, Saint John of Colazan and the Holy Supper. The Four Evangelists adorn the vault. In the back of the cathedral there is a courtyard with an altar in honor of the Virgin of Lourdes.

The cathedral even survived the Honduran civil wars of 1919 and 1924. Many buildings in Tegucigalpa were damaged by bullets. However the temple managed to survive this tragedy.

The Iglesia Catolica Madre de la Misericordia continues to be a vital part of the community. Its presence is a reminder of the enduring power of faith.
