This unassuming structure on New Hampshire Avenue became the birthplace of the Iglesia Bautista Getsemani. A young minister Rev James Thomas Harvey saw its potential. He envisioned a Baptist church to serve his community. He gathered nine believers in the home of Mrs Mary Washington. They held a prayer service. This marked the official beginning of the Iglesia Bautista Getsemani.
Rev Harvey’s path wasn’t easy. He faced challenges. Another minister was already using the building. To resolve this they agreed to alternating services. Rev Harvey’s sermon proved more effective. The Methodist minister withdrew. The little frame building became solely theirs. The early years were marked by financial struggles and hardship. The church faced many obstacles. Rev Harvey’s unwavering faith and determination propelled them forward. The congregation grew both spiritually and numerically. People came from far and wide to hear him preach.
Despite limited resources the church expanded. They purchased land on 21st Street. They planned a new edifice. Then a church on 22nd and Virginia Avenue became available. This offered a better option. In 1922 the Iglesia Bautista Getsemani moved into this larger building. Membership had grown to hundreds. The Great Depression hit hard. Financial difficulties returned. Yet the church persevered. Rev Harvey’s health declined. He passed away in 1941. He left behind a legacy of faith. His work laid a solid foundation for the church’s future growth.
The Iglesia Bautista Getsemani continued to thrive under different leaders. Each pastor built upon the foundation laid by Rev Harvey. They overcame further hurdles. The church paid off its mortgage. It also relocated again to its current home. This involved purchasing and then selling different locations. They even established a child care center. This was a remarkable achievement for the time.
