Can you imagine a skyscraper transforming into a luxurious high-rise apartment? Here at the IBM Building, or as it’s now known, Observatory Tower, that’s exactly what happened. The IBM Building, originally a 21-story office building constructed in 1964, once housed the innovative minds of IBM. Its imposing Brutalist architecture dominated the Sydney skyline on Kent Street in Millers Point. It stood as a testament to the power of technology and the rise of international corporations. In 1996, the IBM Building underwent a dramatic transformation. Ten additional stories were grafted onto the original steel frame, converting the office space into 199 luxury apartments. This architectural feat resulted in a 29-level residential tower, rechristened Observatory Tower. The conversion wasn’t just about adding floors. It included a retail area, concierge services, and parking for 265 cars within its podium. Imagine a lavish lobby, a state-of-the-art health club, a shimmering swimming pool, and a spiraling staircase leading to a private mezzanine library. Observatory Tower offers breathtaking, unobstructed views of Sydney Harbour and the CBD. Its prime location near Sydney’s historic Observatory and the southern end of the Harbour Bridge adds to its allure. The IBM Building, now Observatory Tower, stands as a symbol of adaptation and progress. It reminds us that even in the ever-changing landscape of a modern city, structures can evolve to meet new needs while still retaining echoes of their past.
