Hidden within Turin’s Lingotto district lies the I.P.M. Ferrante Aporti. It is a place of confinement, but also of transformation. The I.P.M. Ferrante Aporti, originally known as “La Generala,” stands as a unique landmark. Its history intertwines with the evolution of juvenile justice in Italy. The original structure, a late 18th-century farmhouse and former convent, housed young delinquents and the homeless. In 1818, it became a correctional facility, primarily for women. The institution had a dual purpose. It served as a reformatory and also as an indigo factory. The labor of the inmates was utilized in the production of this vibrant dye, revealing a pragmatic approach to rehabilitation. In 1845, King Carlo Alberto of Savoy initiated reforms focused on the redemption of prisoners. At the I.P.M. Ferrante Aporti, this translated into vocational training and educational opportunities for the young detainees. This intervention led to a significant drop in recidivism rates. Turin’s approach became a model for other European institutions. Even Don Bosco, the renowned educator, contributed to improving the conditions within “La Generala.” A memorable event in 1855 involved 300 boys from the institution being allowed out for a Pasquetta picnic, only to return to their cells later that evening. In 1885, the institution was renamed in honor of Ferrante Aporti, a prominent priest, educator, and politician. Aporti had been invited to Turin by King Carlo Alberto in 1844 to conduct the first course on elementary teaching methods at the University. In the early 2000s, the aging structure of the I.P.M. Ferrante Aporti was deemed unsuitable. A new, modern facility was built adjacent to the old one, and inaugurated in 2013. This new I.P.M. Ferrante Aporti has state-of-the-art equipment. It offers workshops, educational programs, a library, two gyms, a chapel, and even a designated smoking area. The I.P.M. Ferrante Aporti continues its mission of rehabilitation, focusing on education, vocational training, and personal growth. It serves as a reminder that even within the confines of a correctional facility, hope for a better future can be cultivated.
