The I Have A Dream mural isn’t just a pretty picture. It’s a piece of history painted onto a Sydney wall. Created illegally over a weekend in August 1991 by Andrew Aiken and Juilee Pryor it’s one of Australia’s most photographed murals. Aiken and Pryor twice asked for permission from the council but were refused. Undeterred they used a borrowed cherry picker and $1000 worth of paint to complete their masterpiece. They worked through the night concealing their actions in plain sight.
The mural depicts Dr King’s famous words in Gothic lettering. Beneath it a quote from Genesis 37:19 hints at the challenges faced by dreamers. The mural has seen changes over the years. The Aboriginal flag was added to the bottom. A fire damaged part of it in 2011 but it was quickly restored.
This bold act of artistic defiance has made the I Have A Dream mural a heritage-listed landmark. It’s appeared in a TV documentary and even Coldplay’s music video for A Sky Full of Stars. It continues to inspire conversations about social justice.
