Ever wonder about a town named after a hundred people? That is Hyakunincho. This Tokyo neighborhood has a unique story. Its name means “a hundred people town”. But why a hundred?

Let’s journey back about 400 years to the Edo period. At that time, Japan was under the rule of the Shogun. Tokugawa Ieyasu, a powerful Shogun, established a special guard unit. This unit defended his shogunate in Edo. It was called Teppo-gumi hyakunin-tai. This translates to the Hundred-Member Gun Squad. These were not just any soldiers. They were skilled lower class samurai. One hundred of them.

These samurai were expert riflemen. They were under the direct control of the Shogun. Their living quarters were established right here. Because of these 100 warriors Hyakunincho got its name.

The area became known as Hyakunincho. It honored the hundred samurai. They were an elite force in Edo. They were so skilled that people said they never missed their target. Their skill with firearms was unmatched.

Interestingly, near Hyakunincho is the Kaichuinari-jinja Shrine. This shrine has a special connection to the hundred samurai. The samurai visited this shrine. They prayed for accuracy. They wanted every shot to hit its mark.

Today, the shrine is still known for luck. People seek blessings for financial success. They also pray for success in gambling.

Even now traces of the Edo period remain. You can see them in the narrow back streets. The layout is reminiscent of the samurai residences. Walking through Hyakunincho, you walk through history. You feel the echoes of those hundred warriors.

Hyakunincho is also known as a multicultural hub. It shows Tokyo’s energetic and global character.

So, Hyakunincho is more than just a name. It is a reminder of a time when samurai defended the Shogun. It is also a vibrant neighborhood. It continues to evolve. It embraces both its past and its future.
