Perhaps you’ve heard the name Hutchison before. Let me tell you about two remarkable women named Hutchison. One is Cassidy Hutchinson. The other is Kay Bailey Hutchison.
Cassidy Hutchinson served as an aide to Chief of Staff Mark Meadows. This was during the Trump administration. She testified at the January 6 Committee hearings. Her testimony was called “compelling” by many media outlets. Cassidy Hutchinson’s memoir “Enough” was published in 2023.
While at Christopher Newport University, Cassidy Hutchinson interned for Senator Ted Cruz. She also interned for House whip Steve Scalise. In 2018, she interned in the White House Office of Legislative Affairs. Later, she became an employee there.
In March 2020, Mark Meadows selected her as one of his aides. She became Meadows’s principal assistant. Her title was Special Assistant to the President. She was also Coordinator for Legislative Affairs. Cassidy Hutchinson worked in an office near the Oval Office. She took notes at meetings. She traveled with Meadows.
In her memoir, Cassidy Hutchinson alleges Rudy Giuliani groped her. This happened backstage during a Trump speech. She also wrote that Matt Gaetz made repeated passes at her.
Under subpoena, Cassidy Hutchinson gave four depositions to the January 6 Committee. Before her testimony, Trump allies sent her messages. These messages suggested she show loyalty to Trump.
Hutchinson testified about the planning of the Save America March. She overheard mention of Oath Keepers and Proud Boys. Hutchinson testified that Meadows and Giuliani sought presidential pardons. She said congressmen Matt Gaetz, Andy Biggs, Scott Perry, and Louie Gohmert also requested pardons.
Hutchison testified that Trump threw his lunch plate against a wall. This happened when he learned William Barr had not found evidence of election fraud. The wall was splashed with ketchup.
Hutchison testified that Trump knew some people were carrying weapons. He insisted the magnetometers be removed. He said they were not there to hurt him.
Hutchison testified about Trump’s anger when he was not allowed to go to the Capitol on January 6.
Now let’s turn our attention to Kay Bailey Hutchison. She is another remarkable woman with the same last name.
Kay Bailey Hutchison has decades of experience in public service. She has been a bank executive. She has been a U.S. Senator. Most recently, she was the U.S. Ambassador to NATO.
In January 2021, she stepped down as U.S. Ambassador to NATO. She managed the 250-person mission. She worked to maintain U.S. leadership in the 30 Ally Alliance.
Kay Bailey Hutchison served as U.S. Senator from Texas from 1993 to 2013. She was elected Chairman of the Republican Policy Committee. She served on the Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee. She chaired the Military Construction Committee of Appropriations. She also served on the Banking and Armed Services Committees.
In 1990, Kay was elected Texas State Treasurer. She fought against a state income tax. She put restrictions on state debt. President George H.W. Bush appointed her to the U.S. Transportation Infrastructure Advisory Commission.
Between 1978 and 1990, she was Senior Vice President and General Counsel of Republic Bank Corporation.
She was elected for two terms to the Texas House of Representatives. She was appointed Vice Chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).
She now serves on the Board of Directors of the Atlantic Council. She is a Senior Advisor at CSIS and NASA. She also serves on the Bank of America Global Advisory Board. She is a member of the Aspen Strategy Group.
In 2013, the Dallas City Council named the city’s convention center the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center. President Barack Obama signed into law the bill to rename Section 219(c) of the Internal Revenue Code the Kay Bailey Hutchison Spousal IRA.
Senator Hutchison has authored three books. These include “American Heroines: The Spirited Women Who Shaped Our Country”.
