Hurstville Indonesian Presbyterian Church stands proudly at the corner of Park Road and MacMahon Street. It’s a vibrant hub for a diverse congregation reflecting the multicultural tapestry of Sydney. The church you see today isn’t the first to grace this spot.

Before this building a Presbyterian church named St Giles stood here. It was built in 1923. Then in 1955 the congregation built a new St Giles as a War Memorial. The original St Giles building still stands. It serves as a youth center today.

A fascinating piece of Hurstville Indonesian Presbyterian Church’s history is its remarkable organ. This instrument had an interesting journey. It began life in 1918 at Hobart’s Strand Theatre. This Wurlitzer organ Opus 157 was one of the first imported to Australia. The organ was later acquired by St Giles. The church even installed a new console and ranks. The organ was eventually restored. Today it fills this church with glorious music.

Many dedicated ministers served St Giles. Among them were Reverend Robert Kay Reverend F Barclay and Reverend R E Davies. The list continues through many years. Each one contributed to the church’s spiritual growth.

The foundation stone of the current building bears a message of faith. It was laid by Lieutenant General Sir John Northcott on March 5 1955. This stone serves as a physical reminder of the church’s enduring legacy.
