Opened in 2004 Huntingtown High School stands as a beacon of education in Calvert County Maryland. It is home to approximately fifteen hundred students from grades 9 to 12. Huntingtown High School is more than just a school. It is a hub of academic athletic and artistic pursuits.
The Huntingtown High School campus is quite extensive. It features a football field softball and baseball fields. There is also a track eight tennis courts and practice fields. Storm-water management ponds dot the landscape. A nature trail winds through the surrounding woods.
Huntingtown High School offers a wide range of academic opportunities. Students can choose from 21 Advanced Placement courses. There are also honors and standard classes available.
Athletics are a big part of the Huntingtown High School experience. The Hurricanes compete in the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference. They also participate in the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association. Fall sports include football soccer field hockey cross country golf and volleyball. Winter sports feature swimming basketball indoor track wrestling and ice hockey. Spring brings lacrosse softball baseball track and field and tennis. Huntingtown even has cheer and dance teams.
One notable athletic achievement is the baseball team’s state title win in 2016. The Huntingtown team defeated Chesapeake High School to claim the championship. It was the first state title for a boys’ team in Calvert County.
Huntingtown High School also excels in the arts. The Music Department includes band chorus and string orchestra. Students regularly participate in Maryland All-State music programs. The Eye of the Storm Productions is the school’s theater company. It has been recognized as one of the top high school programs in the country. They produce a fall play and spring musical each year. Huntingtown was one of the first high schools to perform the musical In the Heights.
The school’s journalism program produces a news-magazine and yearbook annually. The Marching Hurricanes band is composed of wind percussion and colorguard members.
Huntingtown High School offers additional programs such as Robotics Student Government Association Humane Society Club and Key Club. The Robotics team competes in local VEX Robotics Competitions. The Student Government Association is active in state and national organizations. The Key Club is devoted to community service.
Huntingtown High School has also embraced green initiatives. Since 2004 staff and students have worked to raise environmental awareness. They improve stewardship and reduce the school’s ecological footprint. The Environmental Club has planted Bay grasses to restore habitat and improve water quality. The Huntingtown High School building was built with motion-censored lighting and faucets. These features conserve energy and water.
