Have you ever heard of a wall built for the hungry? This is the Hunger Wall, a medieval masterpiece rising before your very eyes, as sturdy and silent as the ages that have passed. This wall, a formidable fortress, was built by the order of Emperor Charles IV, the ruler who helped shape Prague into the city it is today. Built between 1360 and 1362, it was not only a defense against invaders but also a source of relief for the city’s poor.

As Europe was gripped by a terrible famine, Charles IV, known for his wisdom and compassion, had the perfect solution. He ordered the construction of the wall, a grand undertaking that provided employment and sustenance to the city’s impoverished citizens. The wall stretched from Ujezd to the Strahov Monastery, reaching almost to Prague Castle. It was originally around 4.5 metres tall, a towering presence that served as a testament to the emperor’s foresight. The wall was initially known as the “Zubatá zeď” or “Toothed Wall” due to its bastioned appearance. But the name stuck, and it became known as “Hladová Zeď” or “Hunger Wall”, a moniker that echoed its connection to the city’s plight.

This majestic wall stands today, a testament to the ingenuity and compassion of the past. Walking its length is a journey through time, imagining the lives it has witnessed, the stories it holds within its stones. Imagine the laborers, their faces etched with hunger, finding solace in the rhythm of their work, carving out a livelihood from the stone. This is a reminder that even in the bleakest times, there can be resilience and hope, a lesson embodied in the very structure of the Hunger Wall.
