Imagine standing before the tranquil waters of Hung Shui Hang Reservoir. This reservoir is not just a body of water. It is a vital part of Hong Kong’s irrigation system. Hung Shui Hang Reservoir, also known as Tan Kwai Hang Reservoir, quietly supports Yuen Long’s agriculture.

Hung Shui Hang Reservoir sits north of Kau Keng Shan in Tuen Mun. It borders the northwestern edge of Tai Lam Country Park. Lam Tei Reservoir is less than a kilometer away. Both reservoirs contribute to the Tai Lam Chung Reservoir water supply plan. Hung Shui Hang Reservoir splits into two sections. Water flows from here through Tan Kwai Tsuen, Chung Uk Tsuen, and Hung Shui Kiu. It then passes Tin Shui Wai’s west side before reaching Deep Bay.

Like Lam Tei Reservoir, Hung Shui Hang Reservoir primarily irrigates the agricultural lands of Yuen Long. Its location makes it less accessible. The Lam Tei Quarry nearby adds to its remoteness. You will find few visitors on weekdays or holidays because of no picnic facilities around Hung Shui Hang Reservoir.

Hikers seeking a challenge will enjoy the trails around Hung Shui Hang Reservoir. One popular route combines the reservoir with the majestic Eagle Rock and Kung Um Shan. The hike is about 8 kilometers long. Allow about four and a half hours to complete it. The path to Hung Shui Hang Reservoir begins near Sui Hong Station. From there, take the light rail to Chung Uk Tsuen. You will walk along catchwaters and streams. Finally, you will reach the main dam of Hung Shui Hang Reservoir.

Another adventurous route begins at Hung Shui Hang Irrigation Reservoir. This path leads up a muddy hill. You may find yourself facing a steep cliff with a rope ladder. The cliff is manageable, though. The rock surface offers solid grip. After passing the cliff, the trail descends to Tuen Mum.

Along the way, you’ll see remnants of old constructions. These remains hint at the past. The views from the higher elevations are rewarding. Kung Um Shan offers a 360-degree view of the New Territories. Remember to bring plenty of water and wear proper hiking shoes. The trails can be rugged and slippery. Despite being close to civilization, Hung Shui Hang Reservoir offers a sense of escape. It is a place to appreciate Hong Kong’s natural beauty.
