The Mongols’ conquest of China marked the end of the Southern Song Dynasty. The Mongols defeated the Southern Song court in Guangdong.

In the 16th century, Guangdong established trade links with Europe. Guangzhou became a trading port for the Portuguese and British. Macau became the first European settlement in 1557.

The Opium War in the 19th century opened China to Western influence. Hong Kong was ceded to the British. Guangdong became a center of anti-Manchu sentiment. Sun Yat-sen who is considered the founder of modern China, was from Guangdong.

Today, Guangdong has an unbalanced gender ratio. There are over 130 boys for every 100 girls in the 1-4 age group.
