One crisp autumn morning in 1824, two men stood on a patch of land near Appin, ready to step into the unknown. This is the very spot where the Hume and Hovell Monument now stands. It commemorates the incredible expedition of Hamilton Hume and William Hovell. The Hume and Hovell Monument marks not only their journey but also the site of Hume’s house, “Brookdale Farm.” The monument itself was unveiled a century later in 1924, marking 100 years since these intrepid explorers embarked on their journey to Port Phillip in Victoria. The Royal Australian Historical Society erected this obelisk, a silent sentinel against the passage of time. Some of the stone used to build it even came from the ruins of Hume’s house here at Brookdale. The inscription reads: “To commemorate the Hume Hovell expedition. The site of the home of Hamilton Hume. Starting point of the expedition to Port Phillip October 2 1824. R.A.H.S.” Imagine Hume and Hovell on that October day, looking westward. They were setting off with bullocks, horses, dogs, and four convicts. Their mission: to chart the land south of the Murrumbidgee River. The journey was arduous. They had to build a makeshift raft to cross the flooded Murrumbidgee. They even argued and briefly split up before Hovell realized his navigational error and rejoined Hume. The expedition was a success. They found fertile grazing lands and reached Corio Bay in December, reporting their findings to the Governor. The Hume and Hovell Monument stands as a testament to their courage and vision, a reminder of the journey that opened up new possibilities for the young colony.
