Tucked away in the bustling heart of Toronto, Humber Polytechnic whispers tales of innovation and transformation. Yes, right here before you stands Humber Polytechnic, formerly known as Humber College. It’s evolved from a modest institution to a sprawling hub of learning, buzzing with the energy of over 86,000 students. Founded in 1967 by Gordon Wragg, Humber Polytechnic initially held classes at James S. Bell Elementary School. Imagine those first students, eager to seize the opportunities that this new college promised. Humber Polytechnic’s motto, “Carpe opportunitas,” meaning “seize the opportunities,” reflects its commitment to practical, career-focused education. The college quickly outgrew its temporary home and expanded to its current three main campuses: North, Lakeshore, and the International Graduate School. Humber North, adjacent to the Humber River, bustles with activity. Here, students can access a wide array of programs, from business and applied technology to health sciences and media studies. The campus boasts a state-of-the-art Learning Resource Commons, a vibrant hub for student services. Humber Lakeshore, situated on the scenic shores of Lake Ontario, offers a unique learning environment. This campus occupies the grounds of the former Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospital and Lakeshore Teachers College. Interestingly, the Lakeshore Campus has served as a filming location for movies like “Police Academy.” Humber Polytechnic has always been forward-thinking. In 2009, Humber students made history by contacting astronaut Sandra Magnus on the International Space Station from a lab on the Rexdale campus. The college is also committed to sustainability, with both North and Lakeshore campuses achieving Fair Trade Campus designation. From its humble beginnings to its current status as a leading polytechnic institution, Humber Polytechnic continues to empower students to seize their opportunities and shape their futures.
