“2261” will always remain a special place in our hearts. That’s what they said about the original Hugh’s Room Live. This beloved music venue has a story of resilience. It is a testament to Toronto’s vibrant music scene.

Hugh’s Room Live was founded in 2001 by Richard Carson. He created it in memory of his brother Hugh. Hugh was a musician who died of cancer. The venue quickly became a haven for folk blues and roots music.

For 19 years, Hugh’s Room Live thrived at 2261 Dundas St. W. It hosted iconic Canadian musicians. Dan Hill and Sylvia Tyson graced its stage. International stars like Judy Collins also performed here. The intimate listening room created a unique bond between artists and audiences.

Rising rents forced Hugh’s Room Live to leave its Dundas Street home in 2020. But the story doesn’t end there. Brian Iler and other dedicated friends resurrected Hugh’s Room as a non-profit.

They understood the importance of this space. It was a space where musicians could be heard. A space that gives voice to the broad roots canon. The team secured a new home at 296 Broadview Avenue in 2023.

This new chapter was made possible by community support. Over 1000 donors contributed. This grassroots financing ensured the survival of Hugh’s Room Live. The main hall was named in honour of the Green Sanderson Foundation. This foundation made a tremendously generous gift.

Hugh’s Room Live is not just a concert venue. It aspires to be a hub for Toronto’s diverse music community. They offer educational programs and studio space. They provide opportunities for artists of all disciplines.

Since reopening, Hugh’s Room Live has presented over 150 shows. They featured artists like Jane Siberry and the Downchild Blues Band. They even welcomed Juno-Award-winning performers. The venue has also diversified its revenues through hall rentals grants and donations.

Today Hugh’s Room Live continues its legacy. It presents great musicians in an intimate listening room. It remains a vital part of Toronto’s cultural landscape. It is a testament to the power of community and the enduring love of live music.
