Established in 1846, the HTL Wien West, formerly known as HTL Ottakring, stands as a testament to Vienna’s rich history of technical education. Originally called the Gewerbliche Zeichenschule, or Commercial Drawing School, HTL Ottakring’s early focus was on technical drawing. The school was divided into four departments: preparatory school for small businesses, drawing school for construction, school for manufacturing drawing, and drawing school for mechanics. HTL Ottakring initially operated under the k.k. Polytechnisches Institut, now the Vienna University of Technology. In 1865, the school gained independence and moved to the Sigl Locomotive Factory. Its director, Wilhelm Westmann, spearheaded a new educational concept focusing on a day school model for technical education. This led to the school’s transformation into the k.k. Bau- und Maschinengewerbeschule in 1870, becoming Austria’s first commercial secondary school. A part of HTL Ottakring moved to the St. Anna building in the inner city. Later, the entire school relocated to the Schellinggasse, and the building’s unique corner tower and ornate facade still stand today. Throughout the 20th century, HTL Ottakring adapted to changing times, evolving its curriculum and expanding its facilities. The school’s name changed several times, reflecting its growth and development. The move to the renovated Ottakring Tobacco Factory in 1999 marked a significant milestone. It brought together theoretical classrooms, workshops, and a gymnasium under one roof for the first time. This move also led to the name change to HTL Ottakring. HTL Ottakring became HTL Wien West in 2020. Today, HTL Wien West stands as a prominent institution. It offers a diverse range of programs in electronics, electrical engineering, information technology, and mechanical engineering. It provides both day and evening courses, catering to students seeking traditional and vocational education paths.
