Overlooking a vista of green imagine the HSUHK Jockey Club Residential Colleges. These weren’t just dormitories. They were a vision. A bold plan to integrate living and learning.

The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong dreamed big. They wanted a residential college system unlike any other. A place where students not only slept but thrived. A community built on collaboration and growth. The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust donated a generous HK$200 million. This made the dream a reality.

Three magnificent blocks rose on the hillside. They housed four colleges: Fung Yiu King Evergreen College Lee Yick Hoi Lun Mosaic College Patrick S C Poon Amity College and S H Ho Wellness College. Each had its own unique identity. Each fostered a different aspect of student development. About 1200 students found homes here. They shared quarters with three or four roommates. Each room had its own washroom and shower.

But the HSUHK Jockey Club Residential Colleges were more than just comfortable rooms. They were sustainable. The design echoed the university’s commitment to green initiatives. Over 30% of the site was covered in soft landscaping. Vertical greens and green roofs added to the eco-friendly design. The buildings even harnessed solar power. Rooftop PV panels supplied alternative electricity. This powered the common corridors lighting and even part of the hot water.

Beyond the environmental features the HSUHK Jockey Club Residential Colleges fostered a strong sense of community. Each block had communal halls study rooms and laundry areas. There was even an outdoor recreation ground. The college system promoted self-improvement and the development of interpersonal networks. It aimed to nurture commitment and self-discipline. Students weren’t just residents. They were part of an integrated living and learning community. The HSUHK Jockey Club Residential Colleges became a launching pad for future leaders. A place where students not only excelled academically but also grew personally. This residential college system achieved a final Platinum rating. This was awarded by the Hong Kong Green Building Council. It recognized the commitment to sustainability and innovation.

The HSUHK Jockey Club Residential Colleges stand as a testament to a vision realized.
