Gazing at Hrdlořezy, imagine a small village on the outskirts of Prague. Hrdlořezy officially became part of Prague in 1922. Before that, it was a separate village with its own unique story. The name Hrdlořezy is quite intriguing. It translates to “cut-throat.” This wasn’t a reflection of violent inhabitants. Instead, it was a derisive nickname, possibly poking fun at the villagers’ boisterous nature. In 1900, Hrdlořezy was a village in the Žižkov district with a population of 1,007 people. Just a few years later, between 1912 and 1914, a housing colony called “Jarov” was built near the Chmelnice solitary. This marked a period of growth and development for Hrdlořezy. By the time it became part of Prague in 1922, its population had nearly doubled to about 1,800. Hrdlořezy became part of Prague XI. Later, in 1949, it was incorporated into the administrative district of Prague 9. This district also includes Vysočany, Prosek, Hloubětín, and part of Liben. Hrdlořezy has remained a part of Prague 9 ever since. Today, Hrdlořezy is a cadastral district within Prague. The 2021 census recorded its population at 2,912. It’s a blend of old and new, where remnants of its village past mingle with the modern cityscape of Prague.
