What if I told you that right here once stood an independent borough? Today we’re standing near Hradčany. This district surrounds the magnificent Prague Castle. It’s hard to believe that this area was once separate from the rest of Prague.

Hradčany’s history stretches back to the 9th century. Imagine this area centuries ago. It slowly grew around the castle. The castle itself is one of the largest in the world. Its sheer size is impressive. It measures about 570 meters in length. It is also about 130 meters wide.

The district of Hradčany is more than just the castle. Noble historical palaces line the streets. These palaces whisper stories of the past. Romantic nooks and peaceful places dot the landscape. Beautiful lookouts offer stunning views of Prague.

Until 1784, Hradčany stood alone. It was an independent borough. Then, a significant change occurred. Hradčany joined with three other boroughs. These were Malá Strana, Staré Město, and Nové Město. Together, they formed the unified city of Prague.

The Schwarzenberg Palace showcases the oldest palatial architecture. Its gables and sgraffito decor hint at 16th-century château design. The Thun Palace exemplifies late 17th-century style. Architect Jean Baptiste Mathey steered Prague towards Roman inspiration.

Not far away, the Archbishop’s Palace underwent a Rococo reconstruction. This happened in the second half of the 18th century. It shows a shift in the tastes of the era. A passageway leads to the Sternberg Palace. Its garden facade, complete with an oval hall, is striking. It draws inspiration from Roman and French architecture.

The Sternberg Palace is now open to the public. It houses a collection of European paintings. These paintings come from the National Gallery. The collection’s origins trace back to the patriotic nobility of the late 18th century. Aristocratic palaces transformed into public collections. This tradition spans over 200 years. The National Gallery expanded to the Schwarzenberg and Salm Palaces. This expansion fits perfectly within the tradition.

The area around Hradčanské Square is a cultural acropolis. Historical architecture blends with Czech and European art. However, some significant buildings serve mainly tourists.

Take a moment to look around Hradčany. Imagine it as it once was. A separate borough. A place of noble residences. A key piece in Prague’s long and fascinating story. Its evolution has shaped the city we see today. The blending of past and present creates a unique atmosphere. It is a place where history comes alive. The story of Hradčany is a reminder of Prague’s rich heritage. It is a heritage that continues to evolve.
