Consider Hoya. It is not just a place but the seed of a global vision. Hoya began in 1941. Brothers Shoichi and Shigeru Yamanaka established an optical glass production plant here. It was a humble start in Hoya, Tokyo.

Hoya’s initial focus was optical glass. This quickly expanded. In 1945, Hoya launched crystal products. These early products set the stage for future innovations.

In April 1967, Hoya launched progressive multifocal lenses. This was a significant step. It demonstrated Hoya’s commitment to advanced optical technology. By December 1972, Hoya started sales of soft contact lenses, broadening their impact.

The company changed its name in August 1984. It became Hoya Corporation. A new Head Office building was completed, marking a new era. Hoya continued to innovate. June 1987 saw the launch of intraocular lenses and aspherical molded-glass lenses.

Hoya expanded globally. In April 1989, HOYA established HOYA Holdings N.V. in the Netherlands and HOYA Corporation USA. These moves reinforced global management. This global mindset allowed Hoya to adapt and thrive.

Hoya’s innovations weren’t limited to eye care. March 1991 saw the launch of glass disks for HDDs. Hoya formed an alliance with IBM in August 1996. They aimed to develop next-generation glass disks for HDDs.

Hoya continued its global expansion. April 1997 saw the establishment of HOYA Holdings Asia Pacific Pte Ltd in Singapore. It became a regional headquarters.

The early 2000s brought more advancements. In May 2001, HOYA launched HOYALUX Summit Pro and NuLux lenses. October 2001 marked the beginning of manufacturing soft intraocular lenses.

Hoya acquired PENTAX in August 2007. HOYA and PENTAX merged in March 2008. However, Hoya also made strategic exits. In March 2009, the company terminated its crystal business.

SafeVision by HOYA came into play. HOYA acquired SafeVision LLC in St. Louis, MO, in 2020.

Today, Hoya stands as a global leader. Its diverse business includes eyeglasses, medical endoscopes, and intraocular lenses. It also produces key components for semiconductors and LCD panels. Hoya has a dominant market share in these industries. They are a big fish in a small pond.

With over 38,000 employees in 30 countries, Hoya continues to push technological boundaries. Hoya’s journey from a small optical glass plant in Hoya, Tokyo, to a global med-tech leader shows its commitment to innovation and growth. The story of Hoya is one of continuous evolution, adapting to meet the needs of a changing world.
