Established in 1969 Hospital Heliópolis initially belonged to the federal government. It became a state hospital in 1989. This impressive institution stands on Rua Cônego Xavier in Cidade Nova Heliópolis. It serves a vast area. This includes the south zone of São Paulo and the municipalities of Santo André São Bernardo do Campo São Caetano do Sul Diadema and Mauá. Patients even travel from other regions of Brazil for treatment here.
Hospital Heliópolis boasts 330 beds. These are distributed among various specialties. This includes 94 beds for general surgery 40 for internal medicine and 32 for neurosurgery among others. The hospital’s emergency room sees a remarkable 12000 patients monthly. Sixty percent of these are residents of the Grande ABC region.
For many years Hospital Heliópolis was a training ground for medical students. This was particularly true for those at the Faculdade de Medicina do ABC. In 2017 a partnership formed. This was with the Universidade Municipal de São Caetano do Sul. This collaboration provides internship opportunities for fifth and sixth-year medical students.
Oncology has been a cornerstone of Hospital Heliópolis for years. It particularly focuses on head and neck tumors and gastrointestinal tract cancers. Dr Abrão Rapoport the hospital’s technical director highlights this focus. He is a renowned head and neck surgeon and professor at the University of São Paulo.
In 2014 Hospital Heliópolis joined the Hebe Camargo Cancer Combat Network. A new radiology and radiotherapy center opened as a result of this partnership. The investment totaled R$ 17.8 million. This new facility includes advanced equipment. This includes a 1.5 Tesla MRI two multislice CT scanners a PET-CT and various other imaging technologies. At full capacity the center processes thousands of scans monthly.
Hospital Heliópolis has received significant recognition. It consistently ranks highly in research evaluations such as Datafolha. It is currently one of the top-performing hospitals in the state. The hospital’s research output is extensive. There are over 1000 citations in SciELO and over 120 in BIREME. The hospital has even contributed to the Human Cancer Genome Project. The hospital digitalized about twenty thousand patient records. These date back to 1977. They are used for medical research.
