Ever hear the one about the cop, the bassist, and 800 punks? It happened right here at the Horseshoe Tavern on a cold December night in 1978. The Horseshoe Tavern was bursting at the seams. It was the finale of “The Last Pogo”, a punk rock extravaganza. Teenage Head was on stage when an off-duty officer decided he’d had enough. Bassist Steve Mahon warned him, but the cop was insistent. The band played a truncated “Picture My Face” and walked off. Chaos ensued at the Horseshoe Tavern. Tables flew, bottles shattered, and chairs became projectiles. The riot was immortalized in Colin Brunton’s film, “The Last Pogo.” The Horseshoe Tavern isn’t just a building. It’s a living, breathing chronicle of Toronto’s musical soul. Since 1947, this former blacksmith shop has hosted legends and launched careers. From its country roots with Stompin’ Tom Connors to the punk rock fury of The Viletones, the Horseshoe Tavern has seen it all. Did you know the Rolling Stones kicked off their Bridges to Babylon Tour right here at the Horseshoe Tavern with a surprise show in 1997? Or that the Tragically Hip immortalized the Horseshoe Tavern’s iconic checkerboard floor in their song “Bobcaygeon”? The Horseshoe Tavern has always been a champion of Canadian talent. Blue Rodeo’s big break happened here. After a gig, future manager John Caton, impressed by their performance, packed the Horseshoe Tavern with industry bigwigs for their next show, securing them a deal. The Horseshoe Tavern continued to evolve under owners Ken Sprackman and X-Ray MacRae, becoming a hub for the “Queen Street Sound” in the 80s and 90s. Bookie’s Nu Music Night, a showcase for emerging artists, became a staple, giving bands like Arcade Fire, The Shins, and The Strokes their Toronto debuts. Today, the Horseshoe Tavern, under Jeff Cohen and Craig Laskey, continues to pulse with energy. The checkerboard floors remain, a silent witness to countless performances. The Horseshoe Tavern is a testament to the enduring power of live music. It’s a place where every note, every lyric, every memory resonates within these walls. So next time you’re at the Horseshoe Tavern, take a moment to soak it all in. You’re standing on hallowed ground.
