Journey back in time with me to Horní Počernice. It is a place where history whispers from every corner. Today, we will explore the captivating story of this unique district of Prague.
Horní Počernice, once known as Ober Potschernitz, is more than just a municipal district. It is a living testament to centuries of Bohemian history. Nestled in the eastern part of Prague, Horní Počernice boasts a rich tapestry of settlements. These settlements began as early as 4500 BC. Imagine early settlers making their homes here. They were drawn by the fertile lands along the Rokytka and Labe rivers.
The first written record of Počernice dates back to 1322. At that time, a prominent Old Town citizen named Zipota Benešovský owned it. Zipota also built a fortress in Čertousy. In 1357, he sold these lands to Arnošt of Pardubice, the Archbishop of Prague. Later, Arnošt passed them on to Prague University. Emperor Charles IV confirmed the purchase in 1366. The university then granted land rights to various owners. They established estates and sheep farms in Horní Počernice before the Thirty Years’ War.
Even after the war, the village remained under the university’s control. According to the tax records, ten peasant houses and three smallholder houses stood here. Other properties lay in ruins. Later, Horní Počernice fell under the Michelské panství estate. The landowners established a school and a pub. By the mid-19th century, the village had grown to 70 houses with 600 residents.
In 1928, Čertousy became part of Horní Počernice. In 1943, Chvaly and Svépravice joined as well. These mergers shaped the modern municipal district.
Let’s talk about some key historical moments. The first settlement occurred around 4500 BC. The first written mention of Chvaly is from 1088. Počernice was first mentioned in 1322. Charles University acquired the land in 1357. Horní Počernice became a town in 1969. Finally, in 1974, it was incorporated into Prague.
Horní Počernice is not just about ancient history. In 2004, Horní Počernice twinned with Brunsbüttel in Germany. This partnership signifies a commitment to international friendship.
Today, Horní Počernice is a vibrant part of Prague. As of 2021, 15,303 people call it home. The district covers 16.95 square kilometers. It offers a blend of historical charm and modern living.
