See those guardian statues flanking the gate? We’re standing before Horinouchi Myoho-ji Temple. It is a serene escape in Suginami City. This temple’s story stretches back to the early 17th century.
Horinouchi Myoho-ji Temple wasn’t always what it seems. Originally, it followed Shingon Buddhist traditions. But it shifted to the Nichiren sect. Imagine the temple standing strong. It survived the devastating Tokyo bombings of World War II.
Now, look closer. Many of its structures earned recognition as cultural properties. Both the city and country acknowledge them. The celebrated multi-storey Nio-mon gate welcomes us. Notice the kongorikishi statues. These powerful figures were gifted by the fourth Tokugawa shogun.
Next, observe the Tetsu-mon gate. This iron gate dates back to the 19th century. It is a unique collaboration between Japan and Britain. The famous British architect Josiah Conder designed it.
Let’s step further into the grounds. We find the Soshido. It is a building dedicated to Nichiren, the sect’s founder. Look up near the top of this building. Can you spot the protective demons guarding it? These Oni are generally thought to be evil creatures. But here at Horinouchi, they protect the building.
Nearby stands the Gakudo structure. Inside lie many historical ema votive pictures. These were donated to the temple. Horinouchi Myoho-ji Temple is also a place of vibrant traditions.
Think about the yakuyoke ritual. People perform this ritual at the beginning of each year. They seek to cleanse themselves of bad luck. Consider the Joya no Kane event on New Year’s Eve. Locals line up to strike a massive 18th-century bell. It is free for anyone who wants to participate.
Now, picture the main hall. It was constructed in 1819. It is smaller than the Soshido. Nearby is Nicchodo, built in 1828. It enshrines Niccho, a monk. He greatly contributed to the sect. We also have the five-storied stone pagoda. It was erected in 1860.
