“Hope” – an interesting name for a piece of art, wouldn’t you say? We are standing now before the Hope Installation right here in Cologne. This striking work of art, created by the renowned artist HA Schult, is not just a visual spectacle. It’s a powerful statement about the future of humanity and technology. The Hope Installation, completed in 2017, is a visual representation of the Bitcoin exchange rate. It spans a period of 1.5 years and is presented through a series of 51 cloud videos. Why 51, you ask? Schult deliberately chose this number to symbolize the 51% attack threshold in blockchain technology, a critical concept for the integrity of the system. The artist recorded these videos during 51 different passenger flights. He chose clouds as his subject matter to represent transformation and the potential of blockchain to create a fairer, more equitable world. Think of bright, fluffy clouds. In many cultures, those signify prosperity and hope. Dark, ominous clouds, on the other hand, often represent doom and despair. Schult uses this dichotomy to explore the hopes and fears surrounding this revolutionary technology. The Hope Installation reminds us that while blockchain holds immense promise, its success hinges on our continued belief and investment in it. It compels us to confront the intangible nature of this revolutionary technology and its potential impact on our world.
